The New Wave

Langham the perfect English sparkling

British Sparkling Wine has grown an adoring fan base. It’s a wine in vogue, that is making waves across the channel. Langham vineyard is one of Britain’s trailblazers. This year was a significant one for the Vineyard based in Dorset. They broke the glass ceiling of the champagne world by scooping the world’s best sparkling wine producer at the IWSC awards (The Wine Oscars). Langham saw off competition from the industry leaders Taittinger, Lanson, Laurent Perrier and Veuve Clicquot. The sommeliers praised Langham’s Blancs de Blancs, made from white grapes only for its creamy nose, freshness and elegant finish.

The IWSC silver awards is a remarkable achievement for such a young vineyard. The Langham Vineyard was originally established on a dairy farm by John Langham. It was not until 2009 when John’s son Justin took a leap of faith. He saw the potential of the south-facing aspect, chalk soils and unique microclimate perfect for the ripening of Champagne varieties, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. With an abundance of British gusto,  Justin planted thirty hectors of vines, the local farmers and his own six year old son questioned its potential. Boy did Justin prove them all wrong! Langham symbolises the new wave of the wine world, a true celebration of the passionate, eccentric independent makers, also a British underdog story we all love!

This new wave is also evocative in Langham’s approach, their central philosophy is low intervention which is upheld by Langham’s young head winemaker Tommy Grimshaw. This youthful exuberance is driving Langham’s environmentally conscious approach. The grapes are hand picked at their optimal time metres from their winery, which employs the traditional champagne method. The wine is then aged for eighteen months, then aged further under cork. This ensures a characterful flavour, with minimal artificial inputs. The true flavour of the land suitable for vegans.

At Tordoffs Langham is a wine we will never cease to recommend. It is something special, especially with seafood dishes. Why not try something new, surprise your partner, one thing is certain. They won’t be disappointed with a bottle of Langham!
